Universality of Cheese-gate. A Blogger Writes.

A number of people in Scottish public life are feeling distinctly uneasy following the outing of Mark MacLachlan as the 'evil genius' behind the cybernat blog "The Universality of Cheese".   A lot of politicians, some of them quite prominent, have been posting anonymous vituperation on the blogosphere.  They know who they are - and the rest of the world probably will soon too.  The stuff is there forever, if you know where to find it.   Mark discovered just how easy it is for nosey hacks to trawl through months of postings to find the few incriminating remarks that, strung together, make you sound like a cyber thug.

A number of people have expressed sympathy for Mark MacLachlan, including the estimable Joan McAlpine  saying that he is a cultured citizen of the world, a man of intellect and ability. That he is not a venomous cybernat spreading vile smears about other people in public life.  Others have pointed out that the things he said were really rather tame and commonplace on the web and are only really offensive when taken out of context.   But this is precisely the problem with the blogosphere - it's so easy to say things that you later might regret - especially when they are mashed up by the News of the World.   And if his remarks were so benign,  why did Mike Russell, his boss, sack him the instant he heard that Mark was behind cheesy blog?

Actually, I'm surprised no one has seriously questioned Mike Russell whether he was aware of the existence of "The Universality of Cheese" blog and MacLachlan's alter ego, Montague Burton.  I can't believe he wasn't.   He is one of the foremost exponents of new media in the party, and was himself into websites and the blogosphere before most politicians and journalists.  He had his own website which he closed down for political reasons.  His blogs have become private since he became a minister.   Mike Russell was a victim himself of the blogosphere blowback, and it would be extremely surprising if he hadn't at least had some suspicions as to the identity of Montague Burton, even if he didn't endorse his cybersmears.

Look I'm not trying to attack Mike Russell, the new Education Secretary, who is one of the ablest and most intelligent politicians in Scotland. But I suspect that the outing of the cybernats is going to continue and it is likely to damage a lot of prominent people.  The point is that the kind of things Mark MacLachlan was saying, and the manner in which they were expressed, were quite acceptable in the discourse of the pub, or the committee room, but not in wider public debate where the rules are different.

And it's no use citing other blogs like Guido Fawkes in Mark's defence.  That just makes the case. The standard of debate on the internet is dire and deeply depressing.  This is the main reason that people have turned away from blogging and taken to social networking sites like Facebook where they can avoid being abused by anonymous idiots.    Many people I know don't put comments on blogs that they read because they just don't want to be part of the slime.

As this blog has pointed out before - and has even  demonstraed in practice  - there is an inbuilt bias on the blogosphere toward vituperation.  It is written into the very architecture of the web.  The surest way to get noticed on the internet -  to generate traffic, attract links, get ranked on Google - is to attack people in the most offensive way possible.  It makes blogs come alive.  Most blogs aren't really there to be read, they're there to be reacted to.

Which is fine.  No problem with people ranting away in space if that's what they want to do - in private.  But people need to remember that this is a published medium - just like newspapers.  Anonymity is no longer a way of concealing identity, and it is certainly no defence in the law.  Increasingly, you have to be absolutely sure not only that what you are saying is legal, but also that you can stand by it when it is public - and it almost certainly will be made public - because it is out there FOREVER.

The anonymity of the web is the real problem - it leads to blog rage.  I hated reading the comments that used to be posted on my sites here, at the Herald and at the Guardian. After a while it becomes nauseating and depressing.  As I've said before, it's like addressing a public meeting where the audience are all wearing Donnie Darko masks.  That's why I stopped blogging - or rather turned the blog into an online column based on the material I write for print.  Iain Macwhirter Now and Then is really an anti-blog.

I hate and rage myself, of course,  but I try not to do it in public.  I only write on a blog something I would be happy to seen in print with my name on it.  If Mark had done the same thing, he would still be employed.

Reasonable enough piece, although I question your reasoning that since Mike Russell had embraced the web some time ago that he would have had an inclination that an employee was behind a blog.

I have a BSC Honours Degree in IT and Computing and would not have the slightest idea if a colleague was behind a blog - why would I?

On the subject of insult and smear; I find it rather odd that our esteemed Secretary of State for Scotland, Jim Murphy, has himself decided to remove alleged defamatory comments from his own website after a threat of legal action, yet not a peep from the Scottish media.

Also, I have found out that the BBC recently had to apologise to Alex Neil MSP after BBC reporter Catriona Renton misrepresented his views on TV.

Again though, not a peep from our selective Scottish journalists.

Perhaps you might like to have a go at breaking both these stories Iain or is it just 'cybernats' that are to be scrutinised?

Yes. I thought that was fair comment too newsnet. But like you I'm really surprised that, given Murphy's alleged involvement in the previous weekend's "wicked cybernat" story where Wardog called him a "chump" or that other c word, no one in the Scottish press is covering that story.

I no longer read the papers in Scotland and long ago I gave up on the BBC. You can see the lip curl with distate when some of them mention the SNP government. I guess most of them would be in London if they were any good, so I can understand the lack of professional behaviour, I suppose.

As usual the press in Scotland are subservient to their Labour rulers. It's the way that it has been for as long as I can remember and it reminds me so much of the press in Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary...

I also wish Iain that you would engage with your commentators. Most of us seem to take a reasonable stance on this blog. Your posts are reasonable and measured, and that tends to resuolt in reasonable and measured responses. It is a pity that they are ignored.

Iain

I suspect you are right Mike Russell knew Mark McLauglan ran the Cheese blog, but i doubt very much he followed it closely and was aware of what he posted except in the most general terms. And as someone who did follow the blog fairly closely, "in general" it was well written and cultured. I would not at all defend the post that unltimately brough him down ( I commented on it near immediately, told him it was way out of order), but most of the other stuff the NOTW wrote up about the blog was selective and in no way reflected the overall tone indeed spirit of the blog. So, taking the occassional read of the average post on the Cheese blog, I cant see how Mike Russell would have been concerned. And when the offending evidence was brought to his attention he acted decisively.

Otherwise I can only really endorse almost all of what you have written. My own very specific observation is that, even by normal standards, "cybernat" abuse increased significantly post Glasgow North East: Like the Cheese blog, Wardog's blog was also pretty measured - he too lost it on a couple of posts post GNE.

So as the general election draws closer I am sure this problem aint going to go away - indeed, with that 20 seat target looking like a mirrage, get you hard hat on. All ultimately self defeating for the nationalist cause, but some nats seem to be slow learners.

Only some I would stress, and proportinatly very few. But it only needs a few.

Some self-policing would be a start.

Aren't we in danger of creating a middle class talking shop, your infernal 'McChatter' Ian?

Joan McApline makes some interesting parallels in her dual blog post on the subject and whilst not defending the comments or blogs paints a picture of citizen dissent that actually appears healthy ina confident democracy.

What the furore seems to boil down to is some 'sweary' words and taboo's in Scottish society.

Is this really what the Scottish media want to focus on, do they really think such things affect how people approach the question of more powers or independence?

I think in this regard SNP supporters are fooling themselves and as usual, claiming the pro-independence lobby as there's and there's alone.

News flash, no one owns it.

I can't help but laugh at the News of the World attempting to 'unmask' bloggers for smear, this is the paper that has been sued more times than anyone cares to remember over lurid tales, phone hacking and paparazzi intrusion.

Yet not on of the broadsheets dares to question them for fear of Murdoch.

Maybe bloggers do indeed have a power that journalists can only grope at jealously.

OK some anti-blog responses then, Iain -

This raises interesting points. The last few decades have seen the loss of cultural power, mystique and deference to traditional elites. Teachers and university lecturers have been among the first to feel the acute loss of authority; but also doctors, priests, ministers, & politicians too, (etc). Its evident in the decolonised & declasse register and tone of public language; and obvious too among certain kinds of leading journalist who had been accustomed to having the role of a traditional sort of 'writer' & public semi-intellectual. No-one is immune - even important journalists like Robert Fisk are rudely assaulted by online commentators.

This may not necessarily even be a loss. A virtual infinity of chaotic non-argument and grotesque polemic has masqueraded as intelligent public commentary for decades, attached to individual promotional platforms for all sorts of preening & self-regard.

The aggressively reductive response to it all has meant that the logic and evidence of much of what is published is (besides, as you say, being harangued mercilessly and inappropriately) instantly laid bare, and if at all inadequate, stripped limb from limb. The technological pace of the news-demand ensures the frailty of the news-products and their inevitably instant consumption and/or destruction.

That's just the way things are.

But in Scotland it comes with an atypical twist. The UK media is pretty well balanced, in respect of the limited purposes and self-scrutiny of Anglo-British society. There were obvious failings with respect to the Iraq war, of course, but that's a separate issue. In Scotland there is an absolute imbalance against a very large fraction of the general public who support semi-independence or outright independence. This chronic bias is far too often deployed against them, either from within the Scottish region, or from the British state at large, with old-fashioned quasi-imperialistic ruthlessness.

Until fairly recently it would not have been wise to state that you were an SNP sympathiser or voter when applying for work, as it would tell against you. It could also tell against you within the workplace if you were already employed. The institutional mainstream contained the oppressive biases that remain so explicit in the public media. Given this combination of factors, the unexpected freedom of expression in the internet & the Blogosphere meant that it swiftly became guerrilla territory for constitutional reformers, SNP and otherwise. It is wearisome for all concerned because it is an over-intense and artificially contorted public sphere. For all its apparent freedom it is a very confined space. Hence it appears oppressive, morbidly repetitive, and even at times faintly menacing. A freer and more balanced discursive terrain would release some of these tensions - but the sub-hysterical condition of Unionism in Scotland cannot bear that.

Good post.

However Guido's charge, that Political Commentators up and down the UK are out of touch with outside the Village, he describes these journalists as the commentariat, holds true. This is especially the case in Scotland.

Niall Robertson said...

Interesting article. I'm new to the Blogosphere, so have yet to be subjected to extreme ridicule and mockery. I write because I enjoy it, and because it's something I want to share. I can understand that the insults and the smears can really drag down the reputation of Bloggers, and what they write. But, at the same time, to guard your words when Blogging, as you might do in professional journalism or in public life seems ridiculous. Naturally, for those in public positions, there should be a sense of responsibility when publishing thoughts and opinions online.
On that note, I hope to contribute positive writing to the Blogosphere. Visit me at: www.thejacobite.blogspot.com
Looking forward to seeing you there!

A fair post, but somewhat depressing.

Joan McAlpine's enthusiasm for unrefined, inspirational commentary seems to have been ignored here, although Simon seems to have picked it up.

Given the political apathy sweeping the general public - you only need to look at by-election turnouts - surely blogs are a way of exploring and exploiting new ideas. The 'Commentariat' don't have all the answers Iain. In fact, why are celebrities and any amount of journalists, better placed to comment on current affairs than Joe bloggers?

Yes, there is a lot of trash out there which is indeed cringeworthy and depressing, but there are a few diamonds-in-the-rough who make the wait worthwhile. I'm sure politicians of all shades scan blogs for comments and ideas very regularly.

As for this being an "anti-blog", and your aversion to reading bloggers' comments, why do you even allow comments?

Anonymous said...

It's the web: freedom without responsibility. There's a hidden resentment from the print media that bloggers and online facilities have made their business model defunct and are apart of the machine that could lose them their jobs. They're bitter, and it's understandable.

I don't share Iain's aversion to the web, however. The writers I have found on here, if you look hard enough, are better than hacks for the dailys.

I don't understand the hysteria from Labour over cybernats anyway, they are generally shouting angrily without an audience. Someone said Jackie Ballie "stole my lunch" - so what?? Why pay any attention to this stuff??
